Events & Traditions at MHS

Mooreland holds a number of special events and traditions throughout the school year. Please find a partial listing below, with 2011-12  dates and school contact information.

Parent, Faculty & Trustee Reception – August 30

A Wine and Light Supper Reception for all current and new parents, faculty/staff, Board of Trustees and Founders. This evening takes place in the evening from 6-8:00 PM on the same day that Orientation for new students is held. Attire: Business Casual

Back to School Night – September 20

An Open House for Current Parents to meet faculty and learn about your child(ren)’s schedule & course overview. Not a time for student conferences as those take place separately. Attire: Casual

Berlin Fair Day – October 5

The Berlin Fair is scheduled for the first weekend in October. It is a long-standing tradition at Mooreland Hill to dismiss early on Berlin Fair Friday at noon (no lunch served that day), so that students may take advantage of free admission to the Fair. Students planning to attend the fair should make their own transportation arrangements as this is not a school supervised event.

While admission to the fair is free, students may purchase wristbands for unlimited rides from 11:00 a.m. until closing on Friday night. Tickets are for sale at a discount from Berlin Upbeat and may be purchased through the MHS Front Office. The tickets may be used for students and adults. If paying by check, please make it payable to ‘Berlin Upbeat’. Attire: Casual

Grandfriends’ Day – October 12

Students are invited to bring along a Grandfriend or two to spend a half-day together at Mooreland Hill School. ‘Grandfriends’ may be grandparents, aunts, uncles or a close family adult friend. The day begins with a welcome from the Headmaster followed by abbreviated classes, musical prelude, and lunch. Dismissal follows lunch at 12:30 p.m. Attire: Dress up day for all students.

Fine Arts Evening – December 14

In December, the entire community gathers together to celebrate the Arts at Mooreland Hill. Student artwork is on display, a Silent Auction is held by the Parents’ Association, and the fall Musical is performed by all students. This year’s production is Guys and Dolls. This is event is open to the public. Admission is one or several non-perishable food item(s) to benefit the Greater New Britain Human Resource Agency in their work.

Holiday International Lunch – December 20

A popular Mooreland tradition, current families bring in dishes representative of their various ethnic backgrounds to be shared during our holiday luncheon. A musical prelude begins the luncheon, and dismissal for winter break follows. This is a half-day. Attire: Dress-up day for students.

Mooreland Invitational Boys Basketball Classic – January 12

An interscholastic all-day basketball tournament, by invitation. 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Bingo – February

Family Fun! Fundraiser for outdoor education program. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. and wraps up about 9:30 p.m. Cost: $15/person or $40/family. Additional money needed for extra cards and raffles. Attire: Casual.

Poetry Night – April

An evening of poetry recitation by our students. All families and friends are encouraged to attend. Refreshments provided by the Mooreland Hill Parents Association. This event is open to the public. Attire: Dress up for MHS students.

Mural-a-thon:The Art of Healing

An annual fundraiser to benefit a local charitable organization, most recently, The Hospital for Special Care in New Britain.

Outdoor Education Trips

The outdoor education program offers students a series of sequential activities throughout their years at MHS. Specific information is provided to families in advance of trips while an overview of the program may be found here.

Family Picnic – June

The Parents’ Association organizes a Family Picnic to be held under the tent on the playing fields. Attire: Casual!

Class Day – June

Class Day is held the day before graduation and is set aside for the end-of-year awards, such as: Academic and Effort Honors for the year, Outstanding students in each subject , National Latin Exam, Mathematics League, Dare, Drama, Kaleidoscope recognition, Margaret Hart Young Scholarship Recipient, Outstanding Athletes of the year, Class of ’82 Spirit Award, Four/Five Year Club. Families are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony, held in the gymnasium. Dismissal follows the awards presentation. Attire: Dress up Day for students.

Pre-Graduation Dinner – June

A dinner for graduation students and their immediate family, as well as faculty and their spouses, is held the evening before graduation at Shuttle Meadow Country Club, located behind the school. The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. and includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and sit-down dinner. A short program follows dinner. Cost: TBD annually for dinner, Cash bar. Attire: Dress-up. Jacket and tie for men/boys.

Graduation – June

Graduation ceremonies take place under a tent on the athletic fields. All students are required to attend. This is the last day of school for all students. A reception immediately follows the ceremony. Underclass parents are requested to assist with refreshments. Attire: Dress up. Graduating Girls (only) wear white dresses.
